What Are The Most Common Types Of Molds Out There?

You might have run into a mold problem at home or have heard stories of people who have and want to learn more about the most common types of mold in order to prevent it from growing in your home, or at the least keep it at bay.

You would be right in wanting to do that but it is not always easy to prevent mold, because the spores have a way of sneaking into people’s homes over the air, through open windows and doors, or sometimes we even unintentionally carry them in with us. Not to mention mold that grows in damp and humid areas in our homes, especially after we’ve experienced a leak.

Do All Types Of Mold Look The Same?

Different types of molds have different appearances. They come in a variety of different colors, which are representative of their type and origin, some molds, for example, those that are red or orange in color are typically found outdoors.

Although you will want to remove any type of mold you find growing in your home, it is important to be familiar the different common types of mold in order to know which of them are harmful to your health. Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Stachybotrys atra (black mold) are the three most common types of mold found in American homes.

Aspergillus

Aspergillus is one of the most common types of mold that is found in most homes. It is found in all the warm, moist areas like the bathroom and most commonly in air-conditioning systems. There are over 180 species of Aspergillus, which grows in thick layers. Aspergillus mold causes allergic reactions and respiratory infections.

Cladosporium

Typically Cladosporium has a green or brown color and is found in fabrics around the home, like the carpets. This mold also causes allergic reactions and should be removed as soon as possible after it is noticed.

Stachybotrys atra (black mold)

This is also known as toxic mold and is black or dark green in color. Stachybotrys atra is found in areas that have been damp for a while, as it grows slowly, and it spreads. This is one of the more dangerous types of mold and some of the symptoms it causes include, tightness of the chest, coughing, nose bleeds, headaches, fever, fatigue, and inflamed mucous membranes.

Other types of unhealthy common molds that grow in homes are acremonium – a powdery mold, Alternaria, aureobasidium, Fusarium, Mucor and chaetomium.
